A new paper estimates that the iPhone launch accounts for between one-third and one-half of the decline in the U.S. fertility rate since 2007. If correct, it means that one of the largest demographic shifts of the last twenty years was driven less by economics than by a change in how people spend their time: Too much time screwing around on the phone, too little screwing around in person.
