I have a short essay in the NY Times today on why Americans are such global outliers in their AI antipathy. Hating AI is, as I say in the piece, about the only thing Americans can agree on anymore across party lines.
According to recent surveys, they hate AI more than any prior technology; they are also more anti-AI than their rich-country peers, and much more so than are citizens of less developed countries. It is a remarkable reversal.
Why? People posit many explanations, from disinformation, to poor AI marketing, to outright ignoranc, and more. I argue these are all wrong.
