Chinese patents are mostly built on Chinese science rather than American science, according to a new working paper. Across every "critical technology area" shown, the U.S. share of scientific papers linked to Chinese Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) patents has fallen since 2000. And in most categories, the lines have recently crossed, with China now supplying more of its own science than the U.S. does.
Some implications:
- Only semiconductors and biotechnology remain U.S.-dominated.
- They are converging quickly.
- China looks set to cross over by 2030 at current rates.
